Blurb: My name is Miss Elphick and I am the subject lead for PSHE at Ryedene. Across my career I have worked with a range of young people. I have always enjoyed, not only teaching them the curriculum and knowledge of different subjects, but also to become resiliant and responsible learners. PSHE is a way to aid and develop their lives as they grow older. Watching children develop their own way of navigating life and the experiences that follow is rewarding, seeing how they can build on their own morals and values, whilst learning about managing risk and themselves.
Vision: The vision for PSHE at Ryedene is to ensure a high-quality universal provision of wider social education for all pupils. We want to engage and inspire our pupils to develop their own personal relationships with their peers and wider community. It will help their development in being and belonging in their communities and having tolerance for others. PSHE at Ryedene allows children to embark on a journey to develop skills to be able to build their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement, allowing for the children to leave for secondary school as well-rounded individuals.
What we are teaching in PSHE: PSHE at Ryedene Primary School will be taught in line with the legal requirements - one hour per week. The teaching of PSHE is fully inclusive and will include provision for PSHE for all pupils on the school roll. The content of PSHE will help to achieve our aims of creating independent, resilient and well-rounded learners. Consequently, we ensure the children can respect, listen to, review and consider their emotions.
How we teach PSHE: At Ryedene, all teachers follow the Cambridgeshire scheme of work to guide them and support them to meet the broad outcomes in line with the national curriculum. Teachers have a clearly outlined key documents pack to support them including: a knowledge organiser with prior learning links, skills progression, a Long-Term Plan and Medium-Term plans which are carefully constructed offering a sequence of learning. Planning has the required/example learning outcomes on as well as key questions to ensure knowledge is revisited and remembered. Lesson plans also ensure children understand and explore how to reach the desired outcomes.
Impact – what the children have learnt: Children at Ryedene enjoy having a broad PSHE curriculum and have the opportunity to showcase many different skills. Through engaging in inclusive PSHE lessons, all children can develop their confidence and self-esteem whilst at Ryedene. They develop an understanding and appreciation of themselves, their community and others. We evidence our learning by recording in our books, circle time, class discussions and workshops. All PSHE lessons are taught by classroom teachers so that if any concerns are identified they can be followed up.
